Welcome to the Board of Variance application process.
Please note the following application conditions:
- You must have a MySaanich profile to make an application. If you do not have a profile, register for one before starting.
- Ensure you have all documentation, per the list below, as the online application process will timeout if inactive for 15 minutes.
- Partially completed applications will be saved for up to 15 days, and can be accessed through your MySaanich account page.
- There is a $300 application fee. A credit card is required to pay the application fee.
Effective December 1, 2024 a 2.4% convenience fee will be charged on all credit card transactions related to Development Application or Permits
Required documentation:
- Title Search - Current (within 30 days), including copies of any encumbrances registered on title, e.g. restrictive covenants, easements and rights-of-ways - available at Land Titles
- Project Data Table.
- Arborist report may be required.
- Letter addressed to the Chair and Members of the Board of Variance, briefly explaining the undue hardship/rationale for the requested variance(s). This letter may be provided to adjacent property owners upon request for more information.
- Owner Authorization form - one form required for each owner on title (including the applicant if you are an owner).
- Archaeological Information Request - Confirmation that a request has been submitted to the Province, current (within 30 days) Archaeological Information Request Form
from Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development Contacts.
- One complete set of plans (11 x 17 inches) in a PDF format, less than 10 MB in size including:
- A site plan showing the proposed structure(s)/addition(s) with dimensions from the property lines and existing property lines, dimensions, building(s), setbacks, geodetic grades(as applicable), driveway, trees, easements, covenants and rights-of-way.
- Dimensioned floor plans of all floor levels identifying walls, doors, plumbing fixtures, windows, stairs, decks, room uses labeled. Dimensioned partial floor plans are adequate for proposed deck additions.
- Dimensioned elevation plans (north, south, east and west) showing how the exterior building appearance and the proposed changes with respect to additions, doors, windows, decks/porches, roofing and cladding materials.
- BCLS Survey Plan will be required for all siting variance requests (may not be required for fences).
- BCLS Letter of Assurance will be required for all height variances (may not be required for fences).
